SUMMARY:The Hunter Ice Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Hunter Ice Festival is held each year in downtown Niles during the month of January. The festival pays tribute to the great history of our area’s Hunter Brothers Ice and Ice Cream Company\, which not only created the best ice cream at the turn of the century\, but also cut ice blocks out of Barron Lake and shipped it throughout the land. \n \nThe festival showcases more than 150 ice sculptures situated all over the downtown area and created on site by well-known ice carvers from near and far. Please take time to view the Hunter Ice Festival Photo album. \n \nThis weekend festivities kick off Friday night with Fire and Ice-a live carving show that gets set on fire!  Saturday\, live carving will take place throughout town\, and Saturday night don’t miss Ice Fights- three 15-minute carving rounds always ending with spectacular sculptures. Other activities include Hunter Ice Cream\, Ice Sledding hill\, Family fun Ice Park featuring Ice Ping Pong\, Corn Hole and more! \n \nDowntown merchants offer free hot refreshments in their “warming stations” along with special festival sales and promotions. Armed with fiddle and guitar\, these two Michigan songwriters have had long careers\, both defying genre boundaries in their own respective bands (The Native Howl’s “Thrash Grass” and The Ragbirds’ edgy global folk-rock) \nAlex & Erin’s voices curl together like smoky ribbons floating above the slow-burn of guitar and ever-kindling fiddle. Their live performances carry a wild\, elemental energy as the duo seem to come more alive with each note\, stoking a heat that threatens to burn the whole place down. \nEmber & Ash is a rare collaboration that knows the patience of the long burn\, yet still flickers with the restless energy of new creation. The music is gritty and raw\, like a photo album salvaged from a house fire\, the singed edges of each song frame stories of loss and wisdom – the remnants of what’s left after the flames have had their say. They sing the story of the unquenchable\, unkillable nature within us\, fearlessly bare\, as only survivors can be.
